What do you think of engagement rings with a different gemstone?
My boyfriend just took me to look at rings this past weekend. There were a LOT to choose from and I found some that were okay, but I fell in love with an amethyst ring. The stone is big and surrounded by diamonds, which is exactly how I love my rings. The only thing is that I want my ring to actually say that I'm engaged. The color is pretty light, but do you think it will get the message across? Or should I find something more traditional? I just want it to be perfect because I will, hopefully, only have one engagement ring in my life and I want it to be perfect.

Sapphire is pretty traditional for a ring, believe it or not an engagement ring wasn't always a diamond. The diamond trend was started within the last 100 years, so technically it's not even traditional to have a diamond engagement ring, it's more of a status symbol than anything. The idea behind a diamond being the right stone is that it's the hardest gemstone, so in essence, a diamond is forever because it can't be crushed by any other gem BUT diamond.
Amethyst is quartz, it's beautiful but it's not the strongest purple mineral you could find. It also wont be the most sparkly and would be easy to scratch if you wore it every day. Sapphire comes in every color, it is the second to hardest gem to diamond. If you want a beautiful stone that would last a long time, that would be the more traditional choice. But another answerer said it best, as long as it's on the appropriate finger it wont be mistaken, just admired.
