Mystical Properties of Colorful Gems
Colorful gems have long held our fascination. A brown rock is unearthed – boring, non-descript. But crack it open and voila! It reveals its secret – beautiful, sparkling, rich purple amethyst gems. It's no wonder that ancient people believed these gems held mystical power.
Colored Gems and Ancient Civilizations
Even ancient peoples associated the gem colors with the world around them – the ruby's red color resembled blood and sapphire's rich blue called to mind the sky blue heavens above. In Roman times rings set with colorful gems were a symbol of the powerful and were also exchanged between friends. It wasn't uncommon to see a person wearing a ring on each finger – and often more than one ring per finger.
Colored Gems and Religion
Throughout time different stones have been associated with religions in different ways. For example, each of the Twelve Tribes of Israel were associated with a stone:
Asher – beryl
Dan – topaz
Judah – emerald
Reuben – brown chalcedony
Joseph – onyx
Naphtali – agate
Issachar – sapphire
Simeon – chrysolite
Benjamin – jasper
Gad – amethyst
Zebulon – diamond
Levi – garnet
Likewise, the Twelve Apostles each had a stone:
Peter - jasper
John – emerald
James – chalcedony
Matthew – chrysolite
Andrew – sapphire
Philip – sardonyx
Bartholomew – brown chalcedony
Simon – zircon
Jude – chrysoprase
James the Less – topaz
Thomas – beryl
Judas – amethyst
Birthstones
Some historians believe that these religious associations of twelve eventually led to the current birthstone trend of associating a gemstone with each month of the year, so that it is considered the birthstone of anyone born in that month.
Mystical Properties
Many believed that when worn in jewelry, colored gems could affect the wearer in different ways intrinsic to the stone. For example, it was believed that amethyst could prevent drunkenness and that aquamarine brought love and affection. Carnelian was thought to give the courage to speak boldly and emerald endowed the traits of fidelity and constant love. Ruby was a symbol of love and passion, and gave beauty and friendship to its wearer. Sapphire was for truth, health and innocence.
Colored Gems in Engagement Rings
Colored gems were often used in betrothal rings, and the gems were chosen not only for their beauty, but for the powers attributed to them, like love and fidelity. That changed at the beginning of the 20th century when diamonds were found in South Africa, making that lovely clear stone more affordable and easier to obtain. Engagement rings set with colorful gemstones fell out of favor for decades, but have been making a comeback.
