Explore Jaisalmer's Quintessential Medieval Mansion at the Salim Singh Ki Haveli
It is said that no trip to the historic state of Rajasthan would be complete without a stopover at the resplendent Salim Singh Ki Haveli. Ranked among India's top architectural specimens this exquisite stately mansion is a veritable national heritage in its own right. Quietly nestled within the eastern edge of Jaisalmer city this sprawling mansion served as the backdrop for many an intriguing episode in the city state's tumultuous political history. Built by its namesake Salim Singh Mohta in the resplendent 1600s this impressive family home is steeped in history, intrigue, treachery and tragedy that has not diminished the structure's captivating beauty throughout the ages.
Renowned for its elaborate porches, stunning pillars and expansive open courtyards the Salim Singh ki Haveli is one of the finest specimens of Rajasthani architecture. No part of the massive mansion's left sparse as even the walls of the private residence features carved peacock motifs. Other highlights include the murals, paintings and frescoes that decorate the walls which features detailed depiction of folk life in the period while a number of miniature paintings are also found in the interiors of the house.
The halls of the venue on the other hand are filled with true-to-life portraits of the house's illustrious list of owners and prominent residents. A portrait of a gentleman with a Rajasthani style turban on his head reserves a special place among these. The luxurious apartment complex contained within the haveli is equally engaging as the chambers hosted many a state dinner function. The arched blue cupola roof of the complex is a feature unique to Rajasthani architecture while the 300 odd balconies adorning the haveli is another highlight as no two balconies are alike. It is believed that the now 5 storey building was in fact a seven storey structure when first constructed. The two uppermost floors of the haveli take on the shape of a large ship, earning itself the name Jahaz Mahal owing to this curious fact.
