New US coin Series to honor American Indians launched
The month of November holds an important place in the hearts and minds of Native Americans, it was set aside by the president and the congress as a constant reminder of the suffering and historical injustices that that American Indians and Alaska Natives suffered over the years. During this time, America reflects on the immensurable contributions that American Indians have made to the culture and heritage of the county since its birth.
Native Americans have a time to reflect on the rich traditions that has over the years distinguished them as scholars, entrepreneurs, and leaders in all aspects of American life, a fact acknowledged by president Obama recently in his proclamation of National American heritage month which has now become a yearly tradition designated by the white house. In his speech, president Obama termed as unacceptable the high rates of unemployment, crime, disease and poverty among the American Indians and termed them as disproportionately high disparities.
Last year on November 28, a new version of the Sacagawea golden dollar was launched, this new series of $1 coins were launched on the Native American Heritage day to commemorate the culture of contemporary and Native Americans. US Mint director Ed Moy hoped that Americans would reflect on the contributions made by Native Americans as they use the coin (Fenner, 2008). A lot of work went into making the coin, there was much deliberation during the design review process in order to make sure that the coin was something that was culturally and politically acceptable and that was relevant and respectful.
On one side of the gold colored coin is the image of an American Indian woman planting seeds in a field of corn and on the reverse side is a depiction of a young Shoshone woman credited for guiding the Lewis and Clark expedition across the West from 1804 to 1806 (Reimers, 2007). It is a reminder that colonialists and pilgrims would have been lost and would have perished without the agricultural techniques and knowledge of the Native Americans (Gordon, 2010), there are suggestions to change the image on the reverse side of the coin to depict different themes such as, Jim the Native Indian Olympic decathlon champion, the Cherokee language that was used as a code during the world war and many others like the chief of the Wampanoag and his heroics in aiding pilgrims in 1621.
Although Laudable, I wonder if the launch of the coin will undo the earlier hostility to the Indian Culture that characterized much of the Americans Government Policy which tried to forcefully inculcate beliefs and values of America into the Native Americans. A golden coin is incapable of reversing the exclusion of values of the American Indian and the ethnic intolerance of the past (Reimers, 2007). The American Indians in the not so distant past were treated with ridiculously brutal disdain in employment bureaus and health facilities that no golden mint coin can easily reverse.
Today, the American tribal Indian is still a member of the largest neglected minority undeniably still occupying second class citizenship. The Whitehouse estimates that the 1.6 percent American Indians and Alaska Natives are expected to rise to 2 Percent by 2050, (Staff writer, 2010).They do not estimate when the low standard of living, unemployment, high infant mortality and hopelessness is expected to end. Neither do they clarify when discrimination in law enforcement, housing and employment will cease against this racial minority.
What is necessary and urgent is accommodation towards toleration of Indian cultures by the larger American majority and respect of Indians wants and needs. As long as the American Indians culture continues to be considered inferior and without acknowledging the Native Americans tribal pride and group consciousness, a golden mint coin is of no significance and is an exercise in futility.
