If You Are Visiting Ireland, You Should Reserve Time To Visit The Claddagh Museum Of Galway
The city of Galway is famous for its Claddagh ring museum. The ring which is today an internationally recognized item of jewelry is a major aspect of Irish culture that people touring Ireland should not miss seeing. The village of Claddagh after which the name was named is within the limits of Galway city. It has grown to become a bustling and expensive neighborhood now from its first beginnings as small fishing village. It also happens to be one of Galways more expensive residential areas.
It was probably jeweler Richard Joyce who made the first Claddagh ring
Although the evidence regarding the origins of the Claddagh ring are scantly found, what we are sure of is that the initials RJ can be found in many of the oldest rings. Those letters are the initials of Richard Joyce, an Irishman who was captured by pirates and later sold to a wealthy Algerian jeweler as a slave. His master soon saw in Joyce the qualities that make a good jeweler and proceeded to teach him all he knew about jewelry crafting. Having been released from slavery, Joyce returned home to Galway and started his own jewelry-making business there by producing the first known Claddagh jewelry.
The first Claddagh rings may be found in the Claddagh Ring Museum
Some of the rings made by Joyce, Burge and Robinson are on display in Galway’s Claddagh Ring Museum. Apart from this collection of antique rings, a gift shop is located in the premises of the museum where visitors may purchase memorabilia. Within the museum can be seen the various stages of making the ring. In fact the museum is also a jeweler’s shop where guests can have their own rings designed and personalized for them.
The Claddagh rings’ increasing popularity
Ever since the first Claddagh jewelry came into existence, its popularity has grown among people who admire and believe in the symbolism of the ring. Over the years, hundreds of such rings have been crafted in gold or silver and have passed from one generation to the next in one family. They are extensively used as wedding rings. In many instances Claddagh rings have become part of a family’s tradition and achieved that status of a family heirloom. The popularity of the ring has not abated today as more and more people choose to wear these rings on their weddings. Besides being used as wedding rings, these rings may also be given among friends.
The symbols of the Claddagh ring
The heart is the central symbol of the Claddagh ring. It represents the love offered to the loved one. Loyalty is represented by the giving of the crown, just as a subject is loyal to his acknowledged sovereign. Because both love and loyalty are freely given as gifts by the pair of hands holding them, those hands represent friendship. The message is that everlasting friendship and unending love is result of friendship, love and loyalty in mutual interaction.
When worn on the right hand with the heart turned towards the wearer the ring implies that the wearer is involved but not committed and that the he is still able to select other options. When the heart faces outwards, the wearer is not involved and not committed to anyone. When worn on the left hand, the ring implies that the wearer is engaged or married.
